Spiked Apple Cider Recipe (Easy Bourbon Cocktail for Any Season)

Bourbon apple cider in glasses with orange sugar rim, garnished with orange slices and cinnamon sticks

Spiked Apple Cider that gets its kick from Kentucky bourbon - a fall drink that's perfect served warm or cold. No matter the temperature outside, it's a delightful treat that captures the essence of autumn in every sip.

Creating the Perfect Fall Cocktail

Earlier this year, we added a fire pit to our backyard, along with side tables for drinks and snacks and a few seasonal plants. It's become our favorite spot for evenings with family. This bourbon apple cider is what we reach for out there — warm spices, smooth bourbon, and a citrusy orange sugar rim that makes every glass feel a little special.

Why This Recipe Works

Simmering the cider with cloves, cinnamon, and star anise brings out deep, warm flavor that pairs perfectly with bourbon. The orange sugar rim adds a bright citrus note and a beautiful finishing touch. Serve it warm on a chilly night, or cold for a daytime gathering — either way, it delivers that same cozy, comforting feel.

Bourbon Apple Cider Recipe

For the Cocktail

  • 4½ cups apple cider
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice, no pulp
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1 whole cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 cup Kentucky bourbon (Old Forester 86 proof recommended)

For the Orange Sugar Rim

  • Zest of one orange
  • ½ cup granulated sugar

Directions

  1. Infuse the cider: In a medium saucepan, add apple cider, orange juice, cloves, cinnamon stick, and star anise. Heat to medium, then reduce heat to a simmer for 30 minutes, allowing spices to release their flavors.
  2. Add the bourbon: Remove from stovetop, add in bourbon, and let cool. Pour into pitcher for serving.
  3. Prepare the rim sugar: Add orange zest to sugar and stir to combine. Add sugar mixture to a saucer.
  4. Rim the glasses: Rim edge of glasses with an orange slice, then dip glass rim into the sugar mixture to garnish.
  5. Serve and enjoy: Pour cider into glasses with ice, garnish with orange slice and cinnamon stick. This cocktail can also be served warm - equally delicious!

Yield: 1 pitcher (serves 6-8)

Pro Tips for Perfect Results

  • Bourbon Choice: Old Forester 86 proof provides the perfect balance, but any quality Kentucky bourbon works well
  • Spice Timing: Don't rush the simmering - 30 minutes allows the spices to fully infuse
  • Temperature Options: Serve warm for cozy nights or cold for daytime fall gatherings
  • Make Ahead: The spiced cider base can be made up to 2 days ahead - add bourbon just before serving
  • Rim Technique: Use fresh orange slices for the best sugar adhesion
  • Garnish Fresh: Add garnishes just before serving to maintain their appearance

Delicious Variations

  • Spice Alternatives: Try adding cardamom pods or allspice berries for different flavor profiles
  • Sweetness Adjustment: Add maple syrup or honey if you prefer a sweeter cocktail
  • Citrus Variations: Try lemon zest in the rim sugar for a different citrus note
  • Non-Alcoholic Version: Skip the bourbon for a family-friendly spiced cider
  • Batch Serving: Double or triple the recipe for larger gatherings
  • Garnish Options: Try apple slices, cranberries, or rosemary sprigs for variety
