The Manhattan cocktail is one of the most iconic drinks in cocktail history. Said to have been created for a banquet hosted by Lady Randolph Churchill in honor of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden, the Manhattan quickly became a New York favorite. Unlike the Old Fashioned—which uses sugar—the Manhattan swaps in sweet vermouth for a smoother, more refined flavor.
With just a few ingredients—rye whiskey, vermouth, bitters, and cocktail cherries—you can master this timeless drink at home. Stock your bar with these essentials, and you’ll always be ready to treat your guests to a sophisticated classic.
