Celebrating President’s Day
I Cannot Tell a Lie…..
We celebrate President’s Day each year without giving this national holiday much thought. It was a special day set aside to honor all those who have served as president. When we were in elementary school, we celebrated this day but called it Washington’s Birthday. President Washington, as you know, was our very first president, American and revered through history as the “Father of the Nation.” Despite all of his fame and glory, what do we really know about him?
The most famous story, passed down through the generations, “allegedly” happened in his early childhood. It has been said that young Washington received a hatchet for a gift and used it to chop down a cherry tree, which was apparently a naughty thing to do. When his father asked him who chopped down the tree, he confessed, earning him praise and glory for not telling a lie. I used the word “allegedly” above because there is no clear-cut evidence that this really happened. It seems that the whole thing might have been made up by one of Washington’s first biographers—maybe to illustrate that he was and always has been a wonderful person.
True story or not, the whole cherry tree story made me think about how much I love cherries…and, of course, In the Curious Kitchen Boozy Cherries. Unlike Washington and the tree, it is a fact that our Boozy Cherries are a big hit and one of our best-selling homemade, small-batch products.
Our Boozy Cherries are no ordinary cherry! They are the finest dark Italian cherries swimming in a delicious syrup made with Kentucky’s finest spirits and pure organic can sugar. They are perfect for any cocktail needing a cherry garnish and they can be the superstar of your next recipe that calls for cherries—and they are even delicious over a scoop or two of vanilla bean ice cream. Decadence at its finest. It’s no lie, when you taste our Boozy Cherries, you will never go back to supermarket cherries.
We feature two cherry recipes on our website.. The Cherry Galette is a recipe created out of the necessity to use the abundance of fruit I had after making several batches of Boozy Cherries. I do not know why Boozy Cherries could not be substituted. This special dessert is easy to make and so, so delicious. A galette is a rustic French tart…a round, flat freeform pie. You could use any fruit filling but in honor of President’s Day, why not use cherries?
Boozy Cherry Chocolate Chip Cookies are a curious twist on my Grandmother’s iconic chocolate chip recipe and added the elements of an Old Fashioned Cocktail—a family favorite. It’s the ultimate adult cookie bursting with Boozy Cherries, a splash of bourbon, and, of course, the best chocolate chips.
And I cannot forget the reason I created these boozy cherries in the first place. The Old Fashioned Cocktail and the Manhattan Cocktail are two of our signature cocktails featuring good Kentucky Bourbon and Boozy Cherries. Make yourself a batch of cookies or a cherry galette and enjoy a nice cocktail—and celebrate President’s Day in a luxurious way..
Cheers!
