Mint juleps in and of themselves are refreshing and I do enjoy them year-round and not just for Derby season. There’s just something about that icy cold julep cup that makes them perfect for a steamy hot summer day. Adding the watermelon was just a bonus because watermelon is pure perfection in the summer and added a curious twist to that classic cocktail.

The Aperol Spritz recently found itself in the limelight after being prominently featured in the HBO series, “White Lotus” enjoyed by native Italians and tourists alike on the show. But that makes sense. After all, its origins are deeply rooted in Italy. The original cocktail, an Italian wine-based beverage, was called a Spritz Veneziano and created in Venice in about 1920 but the first official recipe was found in an ad for the liqueur used to make it–Aperol–in the 1950s. It was first used as a way to battle the intense heat and humidity of the hot Italian sun.

When citrus season is at its peak I make sure and take full advantage of the flavor. My husband Steve is a big fan of gin and tonics, especially in the summer. My friend Toni loves gin too and has recently introduced me to some unique flavor profiles that are on the market. You know I am a Kentucky bourbon girl but I am always up for a new cocktail. Recently I have been making cocktails with elderflower liqueur, I love the fruit, herb and spice profiles it add to a drink. What I love most of all is experimenting with flavors, the combination of gin, elderberry and grapefruit is perfect for a refreshing cocktail to enjoy during the hot summer nights. Cheers.

The Mint Julep is the iconic drink of the Kentucky Derby.

Created in the Southern United States in the eighteen century, the earliest mention is in 1770. Churchill Downs began serving the bourbon and mint cocktail in 1938 and to date over 120,000 are served on Derby Day. That is a whole lot of bourbon, mint and crushed ice.

There is a holiday for everything these days but one I am really thankful for is Margarita Day.

The traditional Margarita was not going to satisfy my taste buds so I had to add my curious twist. It was bourbon instead of tequila and it was a must that my favorite Red Clay Hot-Hot Honey was added for the sweet and the heat.

I dreamed last night that I was hosting a party, wearing a beautiful kaftan and sipping on a Limoncello Martini.

My dream was cut short but not the possibility to enjoy a tart and delicious Limoncello Martini not matter what the weather is outside.
