It’s Tee Time Again
For golfers, spring means only one thing. It is time for the The Masters—the first of the four men’s major golf championships—and, in my opinion, the most famous. Aside from nearly a week’s worth of competitive golf, The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia is home to the $1.50 Pimento Cheese sandwich, which is almost as famous as the azaleas, Amen Corner and the preppy green jacket.
The pimento cheese sandwich debuted to the hungry guests at the very first Masters nearly nine decades ago. The founders knew they had to find something to feed the spectators…something tasty, quick, inexpensive, and easy to carry around the golf course. A husband-and-wife catering team helped them decide and offered up pimento cheese sandwiches. Pimento cheese is definitely a Southern staple, originating in the Carolinas and Georgia and was first served as a quick, easy, inexpensive and nutritious way to feed workers at the textile factories, so The Masters’ founders knew it fit the bill. It has since graced family tables, picnics, parties and other special events and some of us are working hard to make it household name!
According to legend, The Masters Pimento Cheese Sandwich recipe is shrouded in secrecy and has been since the first tournament. Chefs and caterers who have worked at the Augusta Golf Club have taken the “secret” part of a secret recipe seriously. The original husband-and-wife catering team apparently took their recipe to their graves; it took years, and years to perfect the sandwich to the club’s standard. Some say it was never the same but a different version was served regardless. Another caterer, who left the club on bad terms, refused to share the popular recipe and was taken to court to reveal the ingredient list but to no avail. Now, that is a secret recipe!
In the Curious Kitchen’s Pimento Cheese is not quite so controversial. Nor do you have to be one of the few Masters’ ticket holders to buy it. I have no doubt that my version is every bit as tasty as the one offered at Augusta National—and a whole lot easier to get!
