Mint Julep

Celebrate the greatest 2 minutes in sports as you sip an iconic Mint Julep cocktail and snack on some race day favorites. And Mint Juleps aren’t only for Derby Day-you’ll find your julep cups coming in handy all summer long.


The mint julep was served at the first Kentucky Derby, just as it would have been served at many establishments during that time period. Kentucky Colonel Mint (variety) was grown on the grounds here at Churchill Downs in 1875, the perfect way to use this fragrant plant. There are several ways to make a Mint Julep, I enjoy this traditional method. My twist is the dried orange, as the ice melts and the orange settles into the drink the flavor melds with the bourbon and mint for an extra

INGREDIENTS

2 ounces Bourbon (Old Forester 86 proof is my favorite)

1/2 ounce Simple Syrup

Handful of Fresh Mint

Crushed Ice

Powdered Sugar

DIRECTIONS

  1. Place 4 mint leaves in the bottom of the julep cup, muddle to release the oils

  2. Add in syrup, bourbon, stir to combine.

  3. Add in crushed ice, garnish with dried orange.

Yield: 1 serving
