From amazing state parks, a food culture rich in Appalachian cuisine and the most spectacular mountains, rivers and lakes you have ever seen.
The Showstopper: Bourbon Ball Cake
Julie McAllister, the creative force behind the bespoke brand Julie McAllister Cakes, shares her recipe for a Bourbon Ball Cake. Inspired by my top secret Bourbon Ball recipe, Julie has created the perfect centerpiece for your Derby party.
I put my twist to her recipe and created it into cupcakes, topped with a Classic Bourbon Ball of course.

The Secret to Perfect Southern Pimento Cheese
I’m serving my special recipe of southern pimento cheese with crackers. My recipe is an interpretation, that came from a taste memory, of my Grandmother’s pimento cheese. It has taken me years to perfect the recipe. While living in Lexington, I ate once at a local deli and had their version of pimento cheese. Theirs tasted just like my Grandmothers. Determined to figure out what the missing ingredient, I asked the owner if he was willing to share their recipe.
After several failed attempts, the owner finally gave me the secret: it was mayonnaise. That was not what I expected to hear, considering my Grandmother lived in North Carolina, I thought for sure it would have been a very Southern brand of mayonnaise. What I learned was the brand that has the same name as a univeristy was not the right one. After years of testing and tasting, I have perfected my recipe to rave reviews. Recently I received a call from my neighbor asking if I happen to be making up a batch, she was willing to pay top dollar.
After all my research and hard work, I decided to start selling my Grandmother's pimento cheese. It was launched In the Curious Kitchen.
I could not resist making Buttermilk Biscuits topped with Country Ham Pate´, a favorite of Steve’s. What makes this ham salad extra special is Kentucky country ham.

Derby Day Cocktails: The Classic Mint Julep
For the cocktails, I’m serving Mint Juleps, the iconic drink of the Kentucky Derby. The recipe is simple and for many it may be a bit strong. I hope that you will enjoy just one while you celebrate our day in the sun.
Growing up I was gifted silver julep cups from my Godparents. A treasured gift that I carefully unpack and use on the first Saturday in May. I love to tell the story of how I came to have such a large collection and the special relationship I share today with them.
My Old Kentucky Home Lyrics
Oh, the sun shines bright
On my old Kentucky home
'Tis summer,
The old folks are gay
Well, the corn top's ripe
And the meadow's in the bloom
While the birds make music
All the day
Weep no more, my lady
Oh, weep no more, today
We sing one song
For my old Kentucky home
For my old Kentucky home
Far away.
Well, the young folks roll
All around the cabin floor
They're merry, all
Happy and bright
By 'n by hard times will
A-come a-knockin' at my door
Then my old Kentucky home
Good night
Weep no more, my lady
No, weep no more, today
We sing one song
For my old Kentucky home
For my old Kentucky home
Far away.
Weep no more, my lady
Oh, weep no more, today
We sing one song
For my old Kentucky home
For my old Kentucky home
Far away.
For my old Kentucky home
Far away
