Kentucky Derby Party Menu & Recipes

“Heaven must be a Kentucky kind of place.” Daniel Boone

Planning your Kentucky Derby party? The first Saturday in May is more than just a horse race—it's a celebration of Southern hospitality, bourbon culture, and time-honored traditions. Whether you're hosting your first Derby Day gathering or continuing a family tradition, this guide shares my favorite Kentucky Derby party recipes and entertaining ideas, from classic appetizers to the iconic Mint Julep. Let me show you how to create an unforgettable Derby celebration with authentic Southern flavors.

In Kentucky the first Saturday in May is like our Christmas. We wait all year for this one day, it’s the day we showcase our beautiful state and our generous hospitality to the world.

I was born and raised in Kentucky and am proud of to be a part of its rich history. Most everyone knows Kentucky for the Derby and its Bourbon culture but there is so much more to share about our store. From amazing state parks, a food culture rich in Appalachian cuisine and the most spectacular mountains, rivers and lakes you have ever seen.

Southern pimento cheese served with crackers for Derby Day

The Secret to Perfect Southern Pimento Cheese

I’m serving my special recipe of southern pimento cheese with crackers. My recipe is an interpretation, that came from a taste memory, of my Grandmother’s pimento cheese.  It has taken me years to perfect the recipe. While living in Lexington, I ate once at a local deli and had their version of pimento cheese. Theirs tasted just like my Grandmothers. Determined to figure out what the missing ingredient, I asked the owner if he was willing to share their recipe.

After several failed attempts the owner finally gave me the secret, it was mayonnaise. That was not what I expected to hear considering my Grandmother lived in North Carolina, I thought for sure it would have been a very Southern brand of mayonnaise. What I learned was the brand that has the same name as a univeristy was not the right one. After years of testing and tasting, I have perfected my recipe to rave reviews. Recently I received a call from my neighbor asking if I happen to be making up a batch, she was willing to pay top dollar.

I could not resist making Buttermilk Biscuits topped with Country Ham Pate´, a favorite of Steve’s. What makes this ham salad extra special is Kentucky country ham.

Derby Day Cocktails: The Classic Mint Julep

For the cocktails, I’m serving Mint Juleps, the iconic drink of the Kentucky Derby. The recipe is simple and for many it may be a bit strong. My hope is that you will enjoy just one while you celebrate our day in the sun.

Growing up I was gifted silver julep cups from my Godparents. A treasured gift that I carefully unpack and use on the first Saturday in May. I love to tell the story of how I came to have such a large collection and the special relationship I share today with them.

Kentucky Traditions & Derby Day Memories

My Old Kentucky Home

Oh, the sun shines bright
On my old Kentucky home
'Tis summer,
The old folks are gay
Well, the corn top's ripe
And the meadow's in the bloom
While the birds make music
All the day

Weep no more, my lady
Oh, weep no more, today
We sing one song
For my old Kentucky home
For my old Kentucky home
Far away.

Well, the young folks roll
All around the cabin floor
They're merry, all
Happy and bright
By 'n by hard times will
A-come a-knockin' at my door
Then my old Kentucky home
Good night

Weep no more, my lady
No, weep no more, today
We sing one song
For my old Kentucky home
For my old Kentucky home
Far away.

Weep no more, my lady
Oh, weep no more, today
We sing one song
For my old Kentucky home
For my old Kentucky home
Far away.

For my old Kentucky home
Far away
